Consumers have been strangled by years of rising dairy prices. They’ve increased 55 per cent since 1994 --
or nearly twice the rate of inflation! It’s no wonder people are buying fewer dairy products.
Wondercow wonders…why can’t we loosen the price squeeze on consumers and reverse this troubling trend??
After all, Canadian dairy prices are the highest in the world, and far above where they should be to
guarantee a fair return to dairy producers.
There's bad news on the horizon for Canada's dairy industry. Canadians are buying less milk than they used to,
and the downward trend is expected to continue until at least 2020. On the upside, the world market for dairy
is growing!
Wondercow wonders...why doesn't Canada look beyond our borders to grow the market for dairy products? After
all, almost every other agricultural sector exports their products -- and they could sell more if world trade
talks weren't stalled by the protectionist force of supply management.
Pressure is building for Canada to reform its dairy system and take its rightful place on the world stage. New
Zealand and Australia have successfully made the transition. Their dairy industries are innovative,
competitive and profitable, and consumers have benefited from lower prices. It's time for Canada to come up
with a responsible, reasonable plan for the future, or someone else will do it for us.
Wondercow wonders…why doesn’t Canada’s dairy industry take a cold, hard look at the facts and create a
realistic plan for the future?
